How to Back Up iPhone WhatsApp Chat History

Today WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging applications in the world. In some regions it’s even more popular than the traditional SMS messaging. Yet data loss is an inevitable problem for all social communication tools, including Apps like WhatsApp, especially when those lost data are extremely important to their users. To deal with this big problem, WhatsApp introduced Chat Backup function for people to set scheduled automatic backup or do it manually. It’s kind of pity that the Chat Backup can only save your chat history plus videos, not other things like status or call history. Here this post will conclude several methods to back up WhatsApp chats in case of missing.

1. Chat Backup in WhatsApp

As its own solution to deal with chat missing, Chat Backup of WhatsApp offers different ways for both iOS and Android users to save their messaging history.

For iOS:
Chat Backup of iOS will directly save chat history to iCloud. Go WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup, click on “Back Up Now” or set Auto Backup, then you can upload messaging history to iCloud, alternatively including videos.

 Note: It can be used to transfer WhatsApp data to another iPhone, but you need to use the same phone number.

For Android:

Note: Chat Backup with Google Drive can’t work on iOS, so this method cannot be used to transfer WhatsApp chats between Android and iOS, even you use the same phone number.

2. Gihosoft iPhone Data Recovery

Gihosoft iPhone Data Recovery is the software that can view and extract WhatsApp chats with videos from iCloud backup. Also, it can be used as a means of saving WhatsApp messages along with media to computer.
  1. Install iPhone Recovery tool on PC and tick on “WhatsApp & Attachments”.
  2. Scan and then export WhatsApp chats to a location selected on computer.

Those same steps can also be used to recover deleted/lost WhatsApp chats on iPhone. Alternatively, you can use the iPhone WhatsApp Chat Recovery software to extract WhatsApp messages from iTunes or iCloud backup.

3. iCloud Backup

Apart from making backup inside WhatsApp, you can use iCloud directly back up all iPhone data including WhatsApp data. 

Back Up with iCloud:
  1. Simply go to Settings > Apple ID > iCloud. 
  2. Scroll down to WhatsApp as well as turn it on. 
  3. Afterwards your WhatsApp chat history will be uploaded every time you sync with iCloud. 
But to view those uploaded WhatsApp data only, you need the third party software Gihosoft iPhone Data Recovery.

4. Back Up with iTunes:

Last but not the least, iTunes is another service for people to back up their iOS devices, including the data of WhatsApp chats.
  1. Install iTunes on computer and plug in iPhone.
  2. Click the top left iPhone icon and Scroll down to “Back Up Now”.
