Directly from iPhone:
If you sync iPhone with iTunes regularly, then you will have backup files on computer, but you will need outside help to view contacts details from the iTunes backup, and here is a ways to extract contacts from backup via the Gihosoft iPhone tool.
1. Contact App in Mac

4. iPhone Exchange ActiveSync
The Mail App on iPhone also have a function of contact backup, which supported by Exchange ActiveSync in the Mail. You just need to set an Exchange account with a email address, and then you can sync contacts to Exchange.

5. Other third party software & services
Besides the above-mentioned, there are a slew of other third party software and services for you to back up contacts in case of loss. You can search on Internet and get lots of results easily like Google Drive, Verizon Cloud, etc.
